Canadian Solar MWT solar cells hit 19.5% efficiency June 10, 2011 -- Solar module maker Canadian Solar Inc. used DuPont Solar met photovoltaic metallization pastes from DuPont Microcircuit Materials in its ELPS cells, acheiving 19.5% solar cell conversion efficiency for monocrystalline silicon (c-Si) cells using metal wrap through (MWT) technology . DuPont Solamet paste used in Canadian Solar s ELPS solar cells. DuPont Solamet photovoltaic metallizations offer good resistance and durability, and is compatible with Canadian Solar ’ s cell manufacturing process. “When compared with N -type cell structures, the manufacturing process for ELPS technology is easy to ramp-up and is cost-effective,“ said Zhang Lingjun, technical VP -- Canadian Solar. This near-20% efficiency is on-track with DuPont s 20% efficiency by 2012 roadmap published in 2010.ELPS solar cells will now move into production, with modules shipping in Q4 2011. DuPont s Solamet metallization paste technology was optimized for MWT solar cells in part through collaborations with Green Energy & Environmental Research Laboratories and Industrial Technology Research Institute of Taiwan (ITRI), said Peter Brenner, global marketing manager, photovoltaics - DuPont Microcircuit Materials, who notes that the collaborations brought solar module efficiency up 1.6%.
